History
Vision Care Direct (VCD) began in 1999 in response to industry trends observed by Reid Nelson and Todd Kimball, OD. They realized that many eye care doctors were losing market share and failing to capitalize on their strategic position in the eye care industry. The first of several solutions addressed managed vision care through the Vision Care Direct system with its associated organizations and technology.
The organizers of VCD recognized that in order to showcase superior eyecare services and materials of its member doctors, VCD needed state of the art web-based claims/eligibility/administration. Within months of beginning VCD, they put together a team of designers and programmers who know both optical and web-based programming to build Eyedox.biz plan administration and the user friendly website, www.visioncaredirect.com.
By March 2001, the first VCD plans were rolled out with the Arizona and Utah Independent Physician Associations. In 2004, State IPA's formed the National Coalition of Eye Care IPA's to provide increased benefits and customer base to the Vision Care Direct system. As of April 2008, over 25 states are participating in the Vision Care Direct system with many more under development. The organization is projecting participation to increase to 35 states by January 2009.
